OUR CHURCH HISTORY

The story of Ewa Beach Assembly of God began in 1958 as an outreach ministry of the Wahiawa Assembly of God Adult Bible Class. The first cottage meeting was held in a local home under the leadership of Mrs. Lucille Headrick. Later that year, an abandoned plantation building in Ewa Town, formerly used as a draftsman’s office, became the church’s first official meeting place.

In May 1960, Rev. Fred Cordeiro was appointed pastor. Under his leadership, the church took a significant step forward when land was acquired in the Ewa Beach community on what is now Makule Road. Through the dedication and hard work of Rev. Cordeiro and the church members, a new sanctuary was constructed on the property. Rev. Harold Headrick and his brother-in-law laid the foundation, and the building was completed at a cost of $48,000. In November 1962, the congregation joyfully moved into its new home.

The church continued to grow steadily throughout the years. Average attendance of approximately 70 people in the early days increased to 158 by 1971 and reached 273 by 1973. Reflecting on this growth, Rev. Cordeiro declared, “Truly, the Ewa Beach church has become a lighthouse in the Hawaiian Islands and is steadily growing. Thanks be to God.”

In February 1976, after a brief battle with cancer, Rev. Cordeiro entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior. His eldest son, Frederick “Duke” Cordeiro, succeeded him as pastor and faithfully served the congregation until August 1979.

Following a brief interim period led by Rev. Robert R. Stalcup, the church unanimously voted him as its next pastor. On October 7, 1979, Superintendent Woodrow Yasuhara officially installed Rev. Stalcup as pastor of Ewa Beach Assembly of God. What followed was more than four decades of faithful leadership and ministry.

During Rev. Stalcup’s tenure, God opened remarkable opportunities for the church to acquire three neighboring parcels of land. The property in front of the church was developed into much-needed parking. The land behind the church was later subdivided and sold, with the final parcel sold in March 2013. This paved the way for the construction of a new sanctuary on the adjoining property next to the church.

On July 28, 2013, the congregation celebrated the groundbreaking of the new sanctuary. Less than thirteen months later, on August 10, 2014, the church held its first official service in the new building. The former sanctuary was renovated and transformed into the Administration Building, which now houses church offices, Sunday School classes, Children’s Church, youth ministries, and fellowship gatherings.

After faithfully serving as pastor for 41 years, Rev. Stalcup retired in April 2021. Through his decades of leadership and the dedication of the church family, Ewa Beach Assembly of God continued to thrive as a beacon of hope and a lighthouse to the Ewa Beach community, sharing the love of Jesus Christ with all.

On April 4, 2021, Rev. Chevis English was officially installed as Senior Pastor by former Superintendent George Nagato and Bob Stalcup. Building upon the strong foundation laid by those who came before him, Pastor Chevis is committed to leading, discipling, and equipping believers for the work of ministry.

On November 2, 2022, the church celebrated 60 years since its first service on Makule Road. As Ewa Beach Assembly of God looks to the future, it remains grateful for God's faithfulness throughout its history and committed to continuing its mission of reaching people, making disciples, and serving the community for generations to come.
